It may be possible, but definitely not recommended.
Obviously having two of the three retaining screws inside the LH engine cover means you need to remove that.
Not a real biggie. Then you can overhaul the starter motor on the bench as you are meant to. Clean up the commutator in a lathe, check/replace the bushes etc.
Depending on the mileage and the symptoms you are attempting to cure, it will pay you to check out the one-way sprag that the starter engages.
Then you will also be sure the alternator nut is tight, as there was a time when we had to pull those models down and check that nut.
You will need an impact wrench (rattle-gun) for that job.
